PAPER Laura J. Cote et al. Tunable assembly of graphene oxide surfactant sheets: wrinkles, overlaps and impacts on thin fi lm properties Wrinkles and overlaps: on the structure-property relationship of tiled graphene oxide monolayers. False coloured AFM images of tiled graphene oxide monolayers showing much higher surface roughness of wrinkles (front) than overlaps (back), resulting in greater light scattering. Graphene oxide (GO) sheets are a unique type of soft building block for creating functional graphene based materials and devices. Rapid progress has been made in the chemistry and applications of GO. However, there is a pressing need for rational assembly strategies of these two-dimensional (2D) sheets, which is crucial for determining the microstructures and thus final properties of bulk GO or graphene materials. For example, wrinkles and overlaps are the two fundamental morphologies between flexible, interacting sheets that are usually convoluted in solution-processed thin films. Based on the recent discovery of the surfactant-like property of GO sheets and their pH dependent amphiphilicity, now we are able to control the tiling of such 2D sheets to obtain thin films with either a wrinkled or overlapped type of microstructure, thus allowing us to deconvolute how these two basic microstructures affect the electrical and optical properties of the final thin films. The work here provides a well-defined example of the materials science paradigm, the microstructure-properties relationship, for this new soft material.

Graphene oxide as surfactant sheets*

Graphite oxide sheet, now referred to as graphene oxide (GO), is the product of chemical oxidation and exfoliation of graphite powders that was first synthesized over a century ago. Interest in this old material has resurged in recent years, especially after the discovery of graphene, as GO is considered a promising precursor for the bulk production of graphene-based materials. GO sheets are si...

Chemically derived graphene oxide: towards large-area thin-film electronics and optoelectronics.

Chemically derived graphene oxide (GO) possesses a unique set of properties arising from oxygen functional groups that are introduced during chemical exfoliation of graphite. Large-area thin-film deposition of GO, enabled by its solubility in a variety of solvents, offers a route towards GO-based thin-film electronics and optoelectronics. The electrical and optical properties of GO are strongly...

Dynamic configuration of reduced graphene oxide in aqueous dispersion and its effect on thin film properties.

The dynamic configuration of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in an aqueous dispersion is revealed by several characterization methods, showing a spontaneous and seemingly irreversible configuration transition from flat to highly corrugated sheets over time. Such dynamic behaviour of rGO leads to a tailored porous structure of graphene-based thin films. This affects their permeation and electrochem...

Surfactant-free water-processable photoconductive all-carbon composite.

Heterojunctions between different graphitic nanostructures, including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes and graphene-based sheets, have attracted significant interest for light to electrical energy conversion. Because of their poor solubility, fabrication of such all-carbon nanocomposites typically involves covalently linking the individual constituents or the extensive surface functionalization to ...
